I created this for my students who needed to work on word family and vowel recognition. It is a race against the clock to read and find matching words.
The game is played in partners. They can either play with timers against the clock, or they can play untimed against each other. Partners sit next to each other and take turns drawing cards. If they read it correctly, and the card is on their side of the game board, the player covers the game board with the matching card. If they do not have the word on their side of the board, the card goes back into the stack of cards. The players are still getting a chance to read the cards, even if they didn't get a match.
Laminate each board and the game cards that match. They are easily stored in a plastic tote or hanging file and are ready all year for students who need practice with any vowel sound. I use these with small groups for remediation, but my students ask if they can play with a partner during work time. They love trying to beat the clock!
There are games for short vowels, long vowels, r controlled, and digraphs.
