What color will make it to the finish line first?
This printable is a great individual or small group activity that works on color recognition through visual or color word recognition. When done in small groups it is also a great tool for turn taking, focus and group cooperation.
A few ways that I use this in my classroom:
-For independent play I will place the sheets into plastic sleeves and leave out in one of our centers. (I typically will do this after we have already played a few times as a group so they are familiar with the game and are able to independently play)
-Small Group (3-5 children is my typical size)
We have played a few different ways...
1. With a large 6 sided cube that has pockets we will slide a color card into each pocket that matches the colors on the sheet, adding 1 random color not listed or a shape/silly card which if they land on this one they roll again.
To play- 1 at a time they take turns rolling the cube, each child will mark the color that is rolled onto their sheet every time the cube is rolled. The object of the game is to see which color gets to the finish line first!
2. Same concept but instead of using the cube we use foam color blocks and place them into a bucket covered with a towel. 1 at a time they take turns picking 1 cube out and all marking that color onto their sheet. Again the first color to reach the finish line is the winner!
(To easily reuse with multiple groups place sheets into plastic sleeves and use dry erase markers!)
They best part of this is instead of competing against each other they are working together and racing the numbers to see which will be the winner for the whole group!
**If you would like to create your own game sheet with the colors you are working on there is an editable version located in my TPT store.
