Jean-Michel was encouraged to be an artist by his mom. This book explains
the life of Jean-Michel. His trips to museums, his car accident, and his
mom’s mental illness influenced his works of art. Jean-Michel had a dream
of becoming an artist since he was a little boy. He persisted. Students will
learn about what influenced Jean-Michel’s work in order for him to draw
recurring “motifs” in his work, the “motifs” he is now famous for.
In addition, students will notice throughout this book, the illustrations by
Javaka Steptoe that won the Caldicott Medal. This student packet includes two Post-Reading Activities.
