This is the first of a two part audiocast about the dangers of plastic surgery in Colombia. Quite frankly the saddest and most troubling story I have heard to date on Radio Ambulante, but a real cliff hanger for students. Plastic surgery is a part of Colombian culture and many women succumb to pressures to enhance features. This story chronicles what happens to Ximena when she goes for a black market surgery and it goes awry. Podcast is 24 minutes and will likely need two play throughs to process all the information, but it is very engaging and links to the AP theme of Beauty and Aesthetics. Download contains questions for pre-reflection, a chart of key vocabulary for comprehension, chronologically ordered questions that follow the story, and an opportunity to make some predictions on part 2 and reflect personally. Answer key included. Works best for a level V AP class or a Heritage Language Learners class. Takes one class period to complete.
Part 2, a separate audio cast will explore how the legal system and corruption gets in the way of carrying out justice and closing illegit clinics in Colombia. Stay tuned!
