Rain by Manya Stanjic / Reading Wonders Aligned
This story tells about how 5 different African animals use their senses to track a storm in the parched savanna.
Here are some ideas on how to use this language + literacy lesson plan:
-Story comprehension, vocabulary, and retell with PreK-1st graders
-When introducing what “character” means (Each animal is a character in the story. Includes character cards)
-Learning about the 5 senses
**I personally use this lesson plan in conjunction with Kindergarten McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders Unit 1 Week 3
Theme: Use your senses
Essential Question: How can your senses help you learn?
Category: Sensory Words
(One vocabulary word I teach while reading this book is also a kindergarten and first grade vocabulary word in McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders. The other vocab word is a 1st grade word but also appropriate for Kindergarteners to learn as well).
-Vocabulary pre-test and post-test data sheet
-Comprehension questions and answers
-Various language questions that include compare/contrast, naming, and associations
-2 vocabulary words, definitions, and model sentences
-Flashcards of the vocabulary words with pictures
-Cards for each animal
-Cards for each sense
-Character and Sensory Label card to use while sorting
-10 what question cards with visual
-8 where question cards with visual
-Draw the characters and setting worksheet
