I created Rainbow Addition Facts to help my students master all sums to 10, the core fluency goal for the grade 1 Common Core mathematics standards. Students begin on the red level (add 0 and 1) and a color coated addition chart is kept in their homework folders. Parents help them master small sections of the table at a time. When my parents think their children have memorized the facts, they send the chart back in signed and I assess the students using the included flashcards. When they have memorized all the red facts, they graduate to the orange level. When they learn all the purple facts, they earn the title Rainbow Addition Master and I make them a crown by cutting out the rainbow and affixing it to a sentence strip crown.
Red Level: Add 0 & 1
Orange Level: Doubles
Yellow Level: Add 2
Green Level: 5 + n (if you use 5-group or ten frame cads in your classroom, these are not particularly challenging)
Blue level: Doubles + 1
Purple Level: Add 3 or 4 (by the time students reach this level, there will only be 6 facts they have not seen on other levels)
