This is a manipulative activity that goes with the "Periodic Table Notes." On the second slide there is a set of squares with various differing traits. Each group of students is given a set of these squares and asked to choose a way to sort, or organize them. After a few minutes each group shapes how they chose to arrange the squares (size, color, alphabetically, etc.) This leads beautifully into a conversation about how the elements could be arranged, and what traits might be most useful for organizing the periodic table. The document includes 10 of each square (I have 10 groups of 4 in my class of 40) that can be cut out and laminated for continued use.
