Rainbow Word Problems are your solution to teaching how to effectively tackle a word problem. The Rainbow Pencil is a color coded tool to help students remember how to work their way through the word problem. The word problems are very simple and the worksheet introduces two characters each time. The point of introducing characters is so that students can see the name, say the name, and then remember the name when they go to the word problem.
Red- Read the problem
Orange- Students underline the question with orange.
Yellow- They circle or highlight the numbers yellow
Green- they box key words with green
Blue- discuss strategies as a class, each worksheet has a specific strategy to work on
Purple- check their work. They can use a purple color or have a discussion.
The worksheets end up being colorful, bright, and fun. Color coding the word problems is purposeful for many reasons:
-Shows teacher what step students are missing
-Shows students what they missed
-Shows students the importance of doing background work before diving into a problem to quickly
-Make math more engaging when they are interacting with colors
-Gives students confidence to move on to the next step once they understand the process
The Rainbow Pencils really give students a new found confidence when it comes to word problems. Explain to the students that these worksheets are easy and finding the answer is not hard. The point of the worksheet is to teach them how to work on more difficult word problems in the future. I told my students that I expect them to know the answer right away because we have already completed our addition and subtraction units, but this is a time to learn new skill.
