Reading Street spelling practice for the entire year! This versatile product allows students to practice their spelling words from any grade 4 Reading Street unit in an appealing rainforest-themed game format. Competing with other students and the element of chance make this activity a fun way to practice spelling words. Students read the words to each other and check each other’s spelling, so students are challenged even when it isn’t their turn. The word cards cover the spelling lists for each of the units. Use the cards for your current unit, or provide a review of the words covered to date by combining card sets. Each unit is a different color to make it easy for you. Challenge words cards (worth double the regular words) are also provided, if you wish to include them. Extra wordless cards can be printed if you would like to add other words—just write the words on the cards using a marker color to match the color of the unit you would like them used with.
Rainforest on Reading Street is easy to prepare and play.
To prepare: Simply print out the game board, the cards for the desired unit(s) and instructions. An optional recording sheet can also be printed and copied to provide practice writing the words and to monitor student work. Laminate the board and cards, and cut apart the cards. You will need a place marker for each player.
To play: Students start on the kapok tree and take turns flipping over a card. They read the words on the card, one at a time, to the student on their right. The card may have 1, 2 or 3 words - the number of words spelled correctly determines how many spaces the speller can move. If using the challenge cards the player earns an extra space for each correctly spelled challenge word. Danger spaces and the chance for extra turns add excitement to the game. The first player to return to the tree wins.
