This activity targets syntax skills in a variety of ways!
Print pages 3 through 18. Cut out all of the words in each sentence. Laminate, if desired. Print pages 19-22. Cut apart the “thumbs up” and “thumbs” down. Laminate, if desired. Print pages 23-30 as needed for additional practice and/or homework.
*For pages 3-22* Distribute a “set of thumbs” to each student. Select a set of cards that make up a sentence (indicated by the number of words in the sentence and a letter – e.g. 4C.) Arrange all of the words in a sentence. This can either be done by the student or the adult. Students then hold up the thumbs up if the sentence makes sense or the thumbs down if the sentence still needs a bit of work.
*For pages 23-30* Distribute these sheets as needed. After listening to each sentence, students can decide if the sentence makes sense or not. Then, they should color the thumbs up if the sentence makes sense or color the thumbs down if the sentence doesn’t make sense. If the sentence is incorrect, students can fix it!
