This activity is a partner activity to be used with the Kagan structure Rally Coach. For this lesson, partners work together to complete a page of 2-digit subtraction problems. The directions explain the procedure, but here it is:
1) Fold the paper in half lengthwise.
2.)Partner A solves the first problem.
3.)Partner B watches, listens, coaches (if necessary) and then praises his or her partner.
4.) Partners flip the paper over and steps 2 and 3 are repeated by opposite partners.
The roles continue until the page is done. In my class, we added the variation that after every two problems were completed, the pairs needed to stop and check their answers with the other set of partners sitting at their table. This made the activity relatively self-checking and allows the teacher to circulate and support children struggling.
I used this activity as a mini-lesson review before doing a quiz on 2-digit subtraction. It really works well and the kids all feel a great deal of success and the engagement in your lesson is really increased!
