They say you truly know how to do something once you've taught it, and this activity not only helps students learn a foundational mathematical principal but also allows students to teach each other and solidify their learning.
This activity is developed for use with the Kagan Cooperative Learning Structure Rally Coach. This pairs activity involves one student doing a problem while the other watches and coaches. Coaching should include questioning strategies that guide the writer to the correct conclusion. The partners should celebrate and switch roles after successful completion and check of each step.
Rally Coach - Solving Linear One-Step Equations is designed to be done as a practice activity after direct instruction on the steps to solving a linear one-step equation with each operation at the middle school level - 6th grade for Common Core States.
It can also be used as a review for upper level classes (Algebra and Geometry) as needed.
