Writing activities based on the story Ralph Tells a Story by Abby Hanlon. This is a fantastic book to help students get ideas for narrative writing.
The book's main character, Ralph, is struggling to find ideas for a story. He gives 4 writing tips. Students can learn from Ralph by writing their own 4 tips based on his suggestions.
The second activity is making a Writing Ideas book. Students can use the discussion cards to help them think of ideas for narrative writing. There are 8 topics to discuss and write ideas for:
-places I've gone
-things at school
Students can keep their book and add ideas to them throughout a narrative writing unit or the year. They use this book when they need an idea for writing.
The third writing included is a title page and writing paper that can be used for student narrative writing. This can stay in a writing station throughout the year.
The craft included is based on a page in the book where Ralph is holding a story. After your students write a narrative story, you can have them make the craft and staple their story to the front of Ralph.
This is a great way to introduce narrative writing to your students and to give them ideas for future writing assignments or independent writing.
