This unit is designed to enhance reading comprehension skills including ordering events, literal recall of details, drawing conclusions, summarizing, recognizing character traits, and associating cause and effect.
Ramona and Her Mother consists of seven chapters. Each chapter is accompanied in this packet by three activities/pages. The first is a vocabulary introduction and prediction page. The vocabulary activities are varied. The new words and the information presented in previous chapters are used to make predictions of what will happen in that chapter. The second page asks the students to answer questions in complete sentence form. Some questions can be answered on a very literal level, while others require the student to dig a little deeper. The third page is a toss-up. It could ask the student to order twelve events taken from the story or decide which statements about a chapter are true and which are false. Students may have to identify who said what or determine how a character felt when something happened.
