Great way to randomly pick a student ont he fly during a lecture, or for selecting random groups for an activity.
This paid version is easy to use.
1. Save this StudentRandomizer.jar file on your desktop, double click to open it.
2. Chose the number of classes you have (maximum of 6).
3. Click on the class you want, then click the 'Go' button to have random student names display on the screen (you will need a text file with your student's names on you hard drive - more details in the 'ReadMe' file).
You also have the option to change where the class list files are stored.
Keep it on your computer all day, it fits in the corner and can be easily accessed with other software open. I use this application as a great way for quickly choosing random students to answer questions or complete tasks in class (I teach mostly math classes). It is a way to ensure fair and equitable questioning in the classroom. I have also noticed students pay more attention since there is a good chance they will be called on!
For even more interest, I reward students that are called on three or more times in a class period. If they answer all questions/tasks correctly they get a sticker! I have also noticed students get interested on how it works and whether or not it is really random.
If you're hesitant, check out my free StudentRandomizer app to use a scaled down version.
