A kid from the city moves to the country! "Finally, I was going to be a good old country boy. (My country cousins always called me city boy.) Mom and Dad became Ma and Pa, just like the old western movies while my bicycle hopped around like a wild bronco." Join this suspense filled adventure as Randy raises chickens and hopes for eggs that he can one day sell.

This has 39 comprehension questions at the 4th-8th grade level. The questions have plenty of rigor and are placed right beside the story.

Here's a few reviews from the paperback...

"A delightful book about -- of all things -- raising chickens. Educational for city kids -- fun for country kids whose family raises chickens.) I was one of those) and I grinned all the way through Author Beaird's hilarious recounts of raising chickens and how he got his first egg. I also loved Amy Koch Johnson's illustrations. This should be in every elementary school library."

"I found myself chuckling as I read this cute story about working hard and taking pride in what you do, a very valuable lesson for readers of all ages. When Randy moves from the city to the country with his folks, his dad informs him that it would be good for Randy to raise chickens. Throughout the story, Randy learns that raising chickens requires patience, sacrifice, and understanding, but also finds the experience one he thoroughly enjoys and loves sharing with anyone who will listen--including his city friends who often come for visits, donning their very own cowboy hats.

I'd recommend "Randy Bamboo in Chicken City" for children making the transition from big cities to small towns, kids who want to learn about farm life or who need to learn the value of hard work, and--of course--for anyone who loves birds anywhere near as much as I do. This was a fun read with bright pictures and lots of laugh-out-loud moments too. Definitely recommended!
Oh, and as a special bonus, there's a song about chickens and a list of discussion questions in the back of the book, both of which I found to be super cool :-)"

"R.C. Beaird's book, "Randy Bamboo in Chicken City" is a story about a young city boy named "Randy Bamboo" who moves to the country with his family and decides to start an "egg business." To his surprise, his parents buy him tiny baby chicks that are not immediately capable of producing eggs. Randy Bamboo quickly learns that egg production takes time, work and patience.
The book is cleverly written in the adolescent voice of Randy Bamboo: a third-grader who often uses cliches to express his feelings. As I read the book I really felt like I was listening to a 9 year old boy tell his story.
The illustrations are done in an appropriate "country" color pallet that is very harmonious with the story line. I really like the facial expressions of the characters. Generally speaking, the pictures remind me of Expressionism; they communicate emotion and energy. Yet they are primitive. This illustrative approach compliments Randy Bamboo's young voice. Overall (speaking as an artist myself), I truly appreciated the honest artistic and literary expression of childhood and imagery in this book. I imagine that young people close to Randy Bamboo's age will easily connect with the character and enjoy the adventure!"

"This is a super cute children's book all about hard work, dedication...and chickens. We loved this one here. We live in a rural community and found this story easy to relate with. Randy has to work hard and learn a lot about raising chickens to meet his goal, but hard work and perseverance pay off in the end. This is great for a teachable moment on working hard to achieve your goals. This was a great little story with fun illustrations. Our favorite was the American Gothic parody as we live only a few blocks from the house itself! This is really a great little story and we'd love to read more of Randy's farm-life adventures!"
