This is a vertical progression of all K-5 English Language Arts Common Core Standards in the Reading Standards for Literature strand’s Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity (RL 10) cluster with Book Lists for the 2-3 & 4-5 Bands, "I Can" statements and IEP goals/Learning Targets.
To reach the top and be ready for college and career students must climb the Common Core State Standards staircase. Find your grade level, then climb up, scoot down. Follow that standard to see where your students have been in that skill (cluster) and WHERE they are headed.
One really useful tool is the “Quick Glance” page. All K-5 (RL 10) standards are on one sheet of paper. In addition are “I Can” statements written in kid friendly language so that your students can understand WHAT they are expected to learn. To top it off, IEP goals for every (RL 10) standard are also included. The IEP goals can be easily adjusted into Learning Targets for general education students. Students need to know HOW they are going to show what they have learned.
Two bonus pages list Newberry winning books in the grades 2-3 and 4-5 text complexity bands with ATOS and Lexile quantitative levels.
Use this “staircase” to differentiate learning, gifted to intervention. It can be used track a student’s level and for standards based grading and report cards. Show this “staircase” to students and parents to help them understand the steps that have been climbed and the steps that will be taken to reach the top and be ready for college and career.
“Staircase” standards are perfect for multi-grade classrooms, English language learners, special education, and school-wide uses.
