The new SMARTER Balanced test adopted in many states asks students to rank information. As a response to this new type of task, I am developing some activities for my students to complete that requires the skills needed to successfully complete these tasks.
How are these different? SMARTER Balanced asks students to establish the best answer instead of the right answer, as many of the old state tests did. It also asks students to support nearly all answers with evidence from the text.
This worksheet is generic enough to be adapted for nearly any literary text. It incorporates both ranking and evidence along with the common core standard of characterization (CCSS.LITERACY.RL 9-10.3). Please take these ideas and adapt them to your needs.
