Description

Students work in pairs to rank groups of vocabulary words from mildest to most extreme. Students must identify (define) words orally, then qualify the words.

For example, students may rank "heat words" (tepid, warm, boiling, scorching). This lesson can be adapted to fit a variety of grade levels. It is a great activity to use while editing writing samples to avoid overusing words and is perfect for helping students understand shades of meaning.
