Most kids have heard someone they know, possibly even their own parents, say “if you were kidnapped, they would bring you back.” This story is a great way to help students to really imagine that situation. I love seeing student reactions to the things Red Chief does in the story.
I like using this story in class near the winter holiday season so that I can use it in comparison to the student-favorite, and if you are honest a teacher-favorite as well, Home Alone.
This unit is a great way to reinforce most reading standards, but I use it to focus my instruction on irony and characterization.
