The decline and fall of the Russian Empire is a fascinating but often overlooked period in history. One of the most intriguing and unusual aspects of the last fifteen years of the Romanov dynasty was the sudden appearance of Grigori Rasputin, the so-called “Mad Monk” of the Czar’s court. His influence and power over Czar Nicholas and his wife, which ended with his murder at the hands of Russian nobles in late 1916, makes for an engaging part of 20th century history study in grades 7-10. This is an informational text and biography of Rasputin and details his actions and prophecies between the years 1903, when he arrived in St. Petersburg, and concluding with both his death and the murder of Czar Nicholas and his family in 1918.
