This is a great performance assessment or benchmark after teaching rates and proportions. I have the students work in groups and each group would get a location card with the information of how many people wanted to order different items. This assessment not only ties in rates and proportions but it lets the students practice place value with rounding since we are dealing with money.
Included in this BBQ Performance Assessment is the following:
-Directions about task and a checklist for students to use before handing in
-Shopping list of items for the BBQ (i.e. 2 Hamburgers for every 1 person (8 for $9.56))
-Cards to copy and cut to give to students ( I used 3 different locations because I usually only had 3 groups)
-Question page about different items ordered and their unit rates
-A full worksheet for students to fill out information with how many people were buying that item, number of packages, and total cost.
-Rubric for you to grade the student on. (has points included)
This assessment usually took 3 class periods (42 minute periods). The students seemed to really enjoy it because it made what they were learning come to life.
