Two applications of purchasing power of the dollar over time and value of inventory over time are used as real world applications of rational functions. Students must solve for x and y intercepts and vertical and horizontal asymptotes of these functions, and graph. The domain of the function must be considered in each graph. No knowledge of derivatives or further calculus is assumed.
Students often (understandably) ask why they learn specific skills. See my Making Math Matter MMM site to see more files on how to find real world applications for math to keep their learning in context.
Could be homework, assignment/evaluation./assessment or classwork.
