This document requires students to work back from the graph of a rational to the equation. Students are asked to identify parts of the graph AND give descriptions of how each of those things is represented in a rational function. I normally have student work on how to graph the function given the equation, but I find that this activity gives them a greater understanding of the connection between the equation and the graph.
I do this is practice after properties of rational functions and their graphs has been taught. I allow a whole class period (50 minutes). It could also be assigned as homework.
