In this unit, students return to the number line to model the addition and subtraction of integers . They use the number line and Integer chips to demonstrate that an integer added to its opposite equals zero, representing the additive inverse. Their findings are formalized as students develop rules for adding and subtracting integers, and they recognize that subtracting a number is the same as adding its opposite. Real-life situations are represented by the sums and differences of signed numbers. Students extend integer rules to include the rational numbers and use properties of operations to perform rational number calculations without the use of a calculator.
