This station activity is used at the end of a number system unit. As a class, we have explored the definition of rational and irrational numbers. We have completed work with number lines to model adding, subtracting, and multiplying integers. A variety of 24 task cards provide questions in which students can apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers. An answer sheet is also provided for students to record their work.
The stations can be used as an opportunity for students to work collaboratively in order to discuss the problems. I encourage students to use math vocabulary as much as possible. I also take advantage of the opportunity to emphasize positive peer relationships. Students are encouraged to be good listeners and to politely offer other possible solutions if they disagree with a peer.
