This product encourages students to discuss and strengthen their rational and irrational numbers knowledge. Students are asked to sort forty different cards into ten different supplied categories. This activity is an excellent way for students to discuss rational and irrational number vocabulary while strengthening the knowledge learned during the unit of study.
The ten categories include:
❶ real numbers,
❷ rational numbers,
❸ irrational numbers,
❺ whole numbers,
❻ counting/natural numbers,
❼ perfect square numbers,
❽ square roots,
❾ terminating decimals,
❿ repeating decimals.
A differentiated option is for students to generate their own categories. A set of cards with blank categories is included. While completing the activity, students discuss and reason the possible placement of each card. Some cards may have multiple correct categories in which they can be placed. After all of the cards have been sorted, students can provide a written explanation of how they decided to place the cards in two categories. An answer document for the explanation is included. Students can also have an opportunity to verbally share how the cards were placed into categories. An answer key of possible solutions is available although many solutions exist.
