Students always want to know how math concepts relate to real life. Well, this is a great activity to get students up and moving while applying their knowledge of ratios and rates. A wonderful cross-curricular approach to teaching math concepts and physical literacy.
Students will learn about heart rates and how to calculate resting heart rate, as well as max heart rate. They will try several activities that will raise their heart rates to different levels of intensity. For each, they will calculate the rate at which they can complete each activity in a given time. They will also convert this to a unit rate. In addition, they will calculate their heart beats per minute, after each activity. Then they will decide what percentage of their max heart rate they are working at.
Students will complete the activities in any order, as you want to stagger small groups around the learning space. In between each activity, remember to take a rest! Results will be more accurate when your body is ready to start working again.
Hope you have a blast with this activity! My kids loved the active approach to learning and applying their current knowledge. It definitely helped reinforce what they had learned and to give it a real life meaning.
