In this unit, students will critically examine the legacy of the Civil War in American public life. Students will explore the struggles to define the war’s place in our collective memory, analyze the recent protests over Confederate symbols in the public square, and consider various proposals for how we can respond to these issues. Ultimately, students will take action by developing and implementing a plan to create change.

The unit includes five lessons, which can be delivered in one week or modified to fit classrooms with different class lengths. All lessons are available digitally or in paper format, and include options for extension and accommodations to support all students.

This unit was developed with support from Teachers Pay Teachers as part of their Teach for Justice grant program.
