Product Description
Once upon a time, your students used to BEG their parents to read that picture book for the billionth time. Now, students think that rereading is “work” and do not use the reading strategy unless absolutely necessary. What happened?

Bring back the joy for (re)reading back and prove the value of this strategy to your students once and for all!

This REreading Project uses choice to scaffold students into reading difficult text without them even realizing it. Not only is this project adaptable to grades 6-12 (Standards Guide included), but you can modify the project to take as little as a week (condensed) or as long as a month (in conjunction with or simultaneously with other units or lessons) – see the Sample Calendar provided.

First, students choose a favorite picture book, a chapter book, and then one of three given “difficult texts” to read. (Students are encouraged to not only reread the texts, but to also pick ones they’ve read before, making the project feel “easier” and giving more room for them to compare/contrast what they got out of the book each time! This option helps them build confidence as they read up to the more difficult text.)

After reading, students will record their thoughts in a compare/contrast graphic organizer that helps them realize what they have gained from reading it again. Finally, students write a short, reflective essay using a given paragraph structure to evaluate the benefits of rereading a text and discuss their experience.

This 8-page download includes the following:
• A 3-page Teacher’s Guide that includes: unit/lesson plan information, (Essential Questions, standards, and “I Can” statements), as well as a sample calendar, a list of 10 ways to differentiate the project within your classroom, the links and Lexiles for the recommended “difficult texts”, and a Standards Guide to adapt the project to grades 6-12 in the CCSS!
• A 1-page directions sheet that introduces the project to students in an approachable way
• A 2-page graphic organizer and essay rubric/directions, ready to copy
• A 2-page sample project for students to critique before writing their own
