Give students an opportunity to focus on reading comprehension as they model and solve word problems. The ReaDraWrite™ strategy challenges students with word problems that require abstract thinking and problem solving. Students understand the problem through repeated, close reading and create a model of the solution before deciding what mathematical operations to use.
Created for my middle school ESL students, this method is a good fit for students who guess or randomly choose operations, students who are struggling readers, and students who get "stuck" on word problems because they are intimidated. Students construct their own method and understanding for each problem, which aligns with Common Core goals of critical thinking and creative problem solving.
Purchase includes four ReaDraWrite™ sheets with three word problems on each as well as answer keys for every problem. Students can complete one sheet at a time, or problems can easily be cut apart. Easily adaptable for homework, group work, or math centers.
