Reach for Reading units are organized around a “Big Question”. This interactive bulletin board is meant to be used throughout the Unit 6: Better Together as students explore the big question of “Why do people work together?” Students show their understanding of the concept by writing to answer the big question. The bulletin board can be constructed with the two dimensional soup bowl and ideas written on the cut out vegetables. (See page T333 in the Reach for Reading Teacher’s Guide for an example.) If you are handy with butcher paper, you can make a three dimensional soup pot by first cutting a “U” shape out of black butcher paper. Roll the top down to look like the lip of a pot. Then crinkle and staple the paper such that it bows out around the top. Students can then put their ideas in the pot and you can pull them out and read them at a later time. My students loved this, especially after reading the selections Domino Soup and Stone Soup!
