There are four components of expert spelling: 1) Visual – knowing if a word looks right, 2) Sound – understanding how sounds connect to letters, 3) Meaning – recognizing and knowing the meaning of word parts and as children get older and 4) Historical – understanding how a word’s spelling relates to it’s origin or history.
“Word Worm” spelling practice reinforces the visual using word shape boxes. The more frequently a child is exposed to the form of the word, they more likely they will recognize if it “looks right.” Students who struggle with the sound spelling connection may be visual learners who could benefit from working with word shapes.
This set includes all units and all weeks for the first grade year. The worm appears in a slightly different spot each week just to keep kids' interest through the year!
