In my experience, children often benefit from additional guided practice with comprehension questions similar to questions on the weekly tests. These selections and questions are original and modeled after the Reach for Reading weekly comprehension test selections. If the tested selection is literature, the practice is literature. If the tested selection is an article with sub headers, then the practice is also an informational article with sub headers. Additionally, I have made an effort to use the phonics patterns, vocabulary and high frequency words of the unit where possible. The practice sheet for week 4 is slightly different from the rest. It focuses only on the new comprehension skill taught in week 4 and does not emulate the unit test as directly as weeks 1,2 & 3 emulate the weekly test.
These practice sheets can be used as homework, with partners, in small groups, or as a whole group. I have had success assigning then as homework and discussing the answers together in class. Using the “numbered heads together” technique is another effective way to use these comprehension stories. I hope you find this useful!
