NOTES ON THIS BUNDLE:
Hello! Here's all the vocabulary homework in one place! Thank you to those who have been buying unit by unit. I believe you can request a refund from TpT if you already bought some of the units but want to buy the bundle for convenience. If you like it, please support me and the rest of the TpT community by encouraging others to buy their own license and telling others about my work. Thank you so much!
This homework is intended to build background for students and help them make a deeper connection to the unit vocabulary words, incorporating principles from National Geographic Reach for Reading’s Best Practices. It also aims to deepen the children’s understanding through connecting to science and social studies concepts of the unit. Whenever possible, I have tried to include experiential activities, or activities that involve family members. Not all words are focused on each week. Some weeks I have chosen to focus on the more complex words that might be unfamiliar to second grade kids.
In my experience, it has actually been fun to read the kids homework! Some of their drawings are very detailed and their insights entertaining. A teaching suggestion is to let the kids share their homework with the class or post it in the classroom.
“Picture It” and “Yes or No” are two activities that are repeated throughout the year in the Reach for Reading curriculum. Sometimes I will use the kids vocabulary homework as a whole class review, projecting their pictures and letting the class guess the word, or having kids read their Yes or No questions to the class.
In Unit 5, I have included a list of character trait words geared towards second graders that can be used throughout the unit. To help students with the “hero word cloud” in Week 3 you might want to print the homework double sided with the character trait word list.
