TIERS is an Early Reading Intervention Program and is best used as a tier 3 strategy for RtI, as well as a tool for teaching English Language Learners. It has proven success in bringing non-readers up to a 2.0 reading level. TIERS is a systematic, powerful hands-on program that maps successful achievement in beginning reading. Students advance through well-developed literacy continuums as they master essential skills to achieve reading proficiency. Students work their way through an organized and progressive series of "jobs" using carefully designed hands-on materials.
This Guide – Reaching the Summit – is the 7th and final guide in the series of 7 Guides in the Program. It provides detailed instructions on implementing the TIERS program along with specific job instructions that can be used by a reading interventionist, para professional or adult volunteer. Most of the materials suggested in the guide are already available in the school building. But, any materials that the teacher may need to implement the program can be readily purchased at school supply stores, developed by the teacher, or available from this author.
Activities in this guide increase the development of comprehension. The learner will also experience opportunities to develop proficiency with opposites, sentence structure, and words that contain a varying number of syllables. In addition, now that the student has experienced so much success decoding the printed text, the student will be give more opportunities to be the creator and writer of text.
