This lab takes two 25 minute segments over a two day period. Students begin with copper turnings and end with flakes of copper metal after running a series of 5 chemical reactions. You'll need concentrated nitric acid, 3M NaOH, 3M sulfuric acid, and small amounts of granulated zinc and copper turnings.
Students love this lab because they feel like they are doing "real" chemistry, and they are. There are other versions of this lab available to you but this one has clear teacher instructions for set up and making solutions, good student questions, teacher instructions about what goes wrong and how to solve it, and a clear key. It's a great lab. It is appropriate for all levels of chemistry.
