Read Aloud Journal Set A read aloud can serve many purposes. This resource is intended to be used flexibly so that it can accommodate your classroom. It includes items to help students focus on a specific reading strategy or skill that the teacher may want to reinforce (maybe to go along with those strategies and skills being learned in shared or guided reading). It also can be used by students to write freely, expressing their own thoughts and ideas. It allows for lots of open-endedness. Overall, the purpose is to get students to think about and interact with text, while having their own notes to go back to if needed. Reading is thinking!

Here’s what’s included:

Journal Cover pages
– Two separate journal cover pages are included. Each is in a decorate frame, but the layout is slightly different on each. One has space for a student name at the top, and one is more general. They both have space to write the book title at the bottom.
Student Information page – This page explains what students can expect with this journal. It gives information about what they’ll need to fill out and what their responsibilities are.
Student Need an Idea? page – This page gives students some guidance with more common reading strategies and with some less general idea starters. Students can refer to them to help them develop their own thoughts about the text.
Student Log pages – There are two different versions. Each has three sections for student responses that can be separated however you choose to break up your reading (chapter, section, date, etc.) One includes only lines for writing. The other has lines and a blank box for an image or drawing (visualizing strategy).
