Product Description

This product includes stopping points within 3 different read aloud books that center around the events of September 11th. Each stopping point includes one of the following: a think aloud, a turn and talk prompt, a stop and jot prompt or a stop and sketch prompt. Also, included are possible before reading activities and discussion points and after reading activities and discussion points. Other resources included are a discussion rubric and thinking stems.

These are not intended to be read all on the same day, but over a period of time.

Read Aloud is a time when teachers can model what proficient readers do as they read. Students need to gather in an area designated for read aloud with a reading partner. Students will be actively engaged in the reading process. They should have their Reader’s Notebook, a pencil and post-it notes.

During a read aloud with accountable talk, the teacher models thinking about the text as he/she reads. The teacher also provides many opportunities for students to respond:

Turning and Talking with a partner

Stopping and jotting quick thoughts on paper

Stopping and quickly sketching what they “see”

Keeping students actively engaged in a read aloud will enhance their comprehension of the text and provide them with an effective model of what a proficient reader does while he/she reads.
