Once a month I like to do a read aloud in the library that then extends into a written assignment where the students create a page in a class book. This lesson can be conducted in conjunction with a fire safety unit. It involves listening to a fictional story about fire fighters, then reflecting on fire safety rules and identify elements of the story that help us know it is a fictional story. There is a writing extension on fire safety rules they have learned either from the story or from the classroom fire safety unit.
