Product Description
This is the first lesson I do with my Kinders to learn explicitly about the parts of a book cover. I use this lesson to set the stage of what an author and illustrator are, creating a year's worth of class books that come from out library lessons and enjoying the sharing of their creations with others. Once the lesson is complete and the class has left I compile their individual pages into a class book, bind with staples and cover the staples with colored tape then present it to the class. When I present the book to the class, the teacher invites me to share what we created together (a prearranged classroom visit). The teacher and I make a big deal of being authors and getting to share with others. After this initial sharing we place this class made book into the classroom library for students to "check out". Teachers tell me the class books we make from the library are the most sought after books.

This lesson is part of a monthly ritual in my library where I coordinate the subjects with the classroom curriculum and then a class book is generated. This is the start of a lesson series called Read Aloud/Class Book and will be bundled with the other lessons in the series. Books I highlight in this series include:

1. Mouse Went Out to Get a Snack by Lyn Rossiter - apples and part of a book cover
2. Fireman Small by Wong Yee - fire safety and nonfiction/fiction
3. Bear Says Thanks by Karma Wilson - Thanksgiving and author study
4. The Amazing Christmas Extravaganza by David Shannon - holiday traditions and creativity
5. The Knuffle Bunny Too by Mo Willems - award winning books
6. Hi! Fly Guy by Tedd Arnold - author study and how books are located in Everybody section
7. One Potato, Two Potato by Cynthia DeFelice - plants and fables
8. Billy & Milly, Short & Silly by Eve Feldman - word families & creativity
9. Dog Loves Books by Lousie Yates - the love of reading
