In my classroom, our desks become too noisy to support independent reading. But when students go to choose a spot around the room, I noticed that we spend the majority of our time roaming around. My solution- designated reading spots around the room! Students look around for a reading spot card and know that when they find one, they’re in a great spot to support their independent reading!
Steps to independent reading success:
1. Choose the card that fits your classroom environment best.
2. Print as many sheets as you need (for my class of 24, I have about 30 spots around the room).
3. Cut out and laminate or tape them for durability.
4. Place around the room in places that allow students to work independently!
During reading time, teach students to self-assess. Am I in a reading spot? Then I’m ready to read!
