The RAW Reading Program is a reading-encouragement program with a technology component. Students record weekly reading on a log, and use the number of pages read to represent miles traveled from Washington, DC. Throughout the year, students track their “distance traveled,” and use Word and Excel to create an update document with a chart that displays their weekly reading. Their update shows total “miles” read and indicates the location to which they have traveled.
Advanced students track their “distance traveled,” and use Word, Excel, Google Earth, and Google Distance Calculator to create a travel diary of their travels. Students will use Google Distance Calculator to locate the cities to which they travel, based on miles read. Their travel diary table will include photos, gathered using Google Earth, from those cities.
This is a fun and technology-based way to encourage reading!
Recommended for grades 1 through 6.
