This program was developed by Margaret Harris, a native of Cleveland OH who holds a BA from Baldwin Wallance University and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University.
Harris’ interest in adult literacy began in 1984 while living in Cleveland, Ohio. She volunteered with Project Learn, which emphasized the Laubach literacy method. Harris later volunteered with the Prince Georges County School System who also used the Laubach method. She realized that the students found the curriculum too basic and the pace a bit slow. “Other issues were that there was no opportunity to work with materials that were relevant to their needs. Most of the students had a specific goal in mind, whether it was a job promotion, the ability to read to their grandchildren or obtain a certification,” adds Harris.
“In addition,” she continues, “the student who did work and attempted to attend class often missed many sessions because of work schedules, personal responsibilities or transportation issues. There was no tool available that would help them in periods of absence.” Seeing the need, Harris compiled her own materials, which eventually transformed into the Read Easy Adult Reading Program.
