Product Description
A new pack for your more sophisticated readers!

Created in response to the popularity of "Letters From a Mystery Animal", I'm thrilled to introduce "Letters From a Mystery Animal 2!" I developed this packet as a "next step" from the original pack, for young readers who have begun to develop more sophisticated reading skills.

Letters are written at a level comparable to "Reading A to Z" levels H-L. Take a look at the preview for a free sample letter from Polly the Possum.

Imagine how thrilled your readers will be when they find out they've received a special letter from a mystery animal! Your excited young readers will get to transform themselves into "animal detectives" as they read clues and use critical thinking and inference skills to figure out who has written to them.

What's Inside This Pack:

1. Ten friendly letters from different mystery animals (Stanley the Stingray, Armando the Armadillo, and eight of their friends!)

2. Each letter is accompanied by a "Words to Talk About" list (for new or important vocabulary words) and "Spotlight Words" (words that follow a certain phonetic theme, present in the letter).

3. Spotlight Word lists include phonetic themes such as s-clusters, long vowels, -ight family, ending -nd blends, and more.

4. Comprehension "Think Sheets" for each animal's letter, with questions on information recall, using the text to support answers, reflection, and summarization.

5.Clear and detailed directions for teaching reading, inferring, and critical thinking in a small and whole-group setting, using mystery animal letters.

6. A description of "10 Ways to Use Letters from a Mystery Animal" to extend and enrich the lessons across the curriculum. FOUR of these activities are completely exclusive to this pack.

7. Directions, sentence starters, and a template for writing back to the mystery animal (plus a blank postage stamp to design).

8. Printable blank comic strips for recording and responding to information in an engaging way.

9. Multi-use Venn Diagram for comparing and contrasting two animals.

10. Kid-friendly links to more information about animals online.

11. "Detective Notes" printables for recording clues (in black and white and color, designed to look like "top secret" folders).

12. Enrichment sheets to guide advanced readers and writers to write their own original letters from mystery animals.

13. An illustrated scientific "Animal Class Guide" to help readers determine which animal is writing to them.

14. A "Word Safari" sheet to extend the learning about each letter's "Spotlight Words". (Excellent for independent work.)

Hours of activities to easily enrich your literacy instruction with no prep! Just print and teach.

I designed this product to have lots of extras and extensions, so your students can:

1. Read with Purpose

2. Write to Express Ideas and Questions

3. Compare and Contrast

4. Practice Verbal Expression

5. Think Critically

6. Infer

7. Make Connections to Other Literature

8. Research and Record Data, and more!

After my own students' enthusiastic response from the first mystery animal letter, I wrote more and more letters, and they quickly became a regular part of literacy stations, small group reading instruction, and whole-class critical thinking activities. Children love animals and getting to be "detectives". Their excitement about the lesson helps them focus longer, sharpen verbal expression skills, and feel confident!

Plus, the main lesson alone easily meets several Common Core Standards.

If you're looking to engage more emergent readers, check out the original "Letters From Mystery Animals", comparable to Reading A-Z levels E-G.

Ready to print, teach, love!

Happy Teaching!
