The 102 sight words used in this product are aligned to the Reading A-Z High Frequency Word Books Sets A-C. Set A has a blue literacy mat and blue word cards, Set B has a pink literacy mat and pink word cards, and Set C has a purple literacy mat and purple word cards. Teachers can easily differentiate activity in small group instruction or at a literacy station by having students work on the color set that is matching the Reading A-Z High Frequency Word Books being read in small group.

The letter cards are 2-sided with one side looking like a magnetic letter and the other side showing the letter on handwriting lines. Beginning in preschool, I introduce the vocabulary of vowels and consonants as each letter is introduced. To visually reinforce this vocabulary, the consonants are blue, the vowels are red, and the letter "y" is in blue and red on the letter cards. Color-coding the vowels and consonants helps students visually when building sight words and develop a better understanding when building CVC words and word families.

Some students have a difficult time transferring their knowledge of building words with magnetic letters and then writing the word on handwriting lines. This product allows the scaffolding needed by having the magnetic letters positioned on the card to show if it is a tall, short, or hang-down letter when building the word. When students use the magnetic letter side of the cards to build sight words, they can create a mental image of the word by its word shape. For example: students more easily identify that “an” and “at” both have two letters AND the shape of “an” looks different than the shape of “at”.

What makes this product unique, is the transition to writing the word on handwriting lines after they build the word. After a student builds the word with magnetic letter side of the cards, they then flip the letter cards over to the handwriting letters and see how to write each letter on the handwriting lines. Having a visual reference on the letter cards is easier for students than trying to look up on the wall and hopefully writing it correctly on the handwriting lines on the literacy mat.
