This is a collection of 12 short books and one 26-page alphabet book. After coloring the illustrations and reading a book in large and small reading group settings, the children take the book home to share their growing reading skills outside of school. This collection of books can not only be used to teach children how to read, but it can provide them a way to practice their growing reading skills. By reading and practicing these books, they will be learning about the basic features of print, to follow the words from left to right, top to bottom, and page to page. Reading these simple books reinforces their knowledge that words are separated by spaces, that words have meaning, and that they can read a text with purpose and understanding. Then, after the children have learned how to read the books during a small group reading lesson at school, they have the opportunity to practice reading them to each other, to color in their own books, and then to take home to keep and to read to other people outside of school.
