I designed this packet so that I can work on fluency with my emerging readers. They are so excited when they can read a short emergent reader! Many have exclaimed, “I want to read more! I don’t want to stop!” So, why not design a unit so that they don’t have to stop?
In this unit you will find several different activities that are designed to work together during full group, small group and center time for the children to practice reading predictable sentences for fluency with a Pirate theme!
Specifically, you will find these activities:
-Pocket chart activity for full group introducing the concept of “predictable” sentences and patterns.
-sentence strips with predictable sentences to be put on a ring for independent practice. Each set is color coded and features a certain sight word and a tracking sheet so the children can keep track of which sets they have read and how many times!
-sentence strips with predictable sentences to be put on a ring for independent practice. Each set is color coded and features a certain character/toy, so the sentences are varied (providing more of a challenge and for differentiation!) and a tracking sheet so the children can keep track of which sets they have read and how many times!
-roll and read strips for either large pocket charts or the student table top ones
-spin and read sentences for either large pocket charts or the student table top ones
-character pointers you can make so that the children are tracking their print!
-“Find a Partner Who” puzzle cards- students match a word to the picture. I use this sometimes as a quick way to partner up my students for partner reading with the rings and also “spin/roll and read”!
-mixed up sentences (Pirate themed) and response sheet
-Roll and Read
-“Make your own” fluency booklets
The sentences are designed to keep your kids focused on becoming fluent readers. The predictability of the sentences help the children feel immediate success! (It has been an extreme benefit to some of my more "reluctant" little ones!) I even have started a fluency notebook that they keep their little readers and read worksheets for more practice anytime they have extra time! (I have these sentence rings on a bulletin board as well, so they are handy anytime! They love to go to the board, select a ring and practice reading when they have finished their work!)
