After reading nonfiction text I use these 16 cards as an easy and quick comprehension assessment. Here is how I use these cards:

While students read the text I give them sticky notes to mark certain passages, for example:

  • * = main idea
  • ! = important
  • ? = questions or "I wonder..." thoughts
  • heart = I like this part!

Once the reading is complete, students draw a card, find the passage, practice reading it and I give them an opportunity to ask me any questions on the text before reading it aloud. As soon as the students are comfortable reading their passage aloud, they read the card, and follow the directions on it.
