I use this in my classroom as a more hands-on way to practice reading “blends” as taught in the A Beka curriculum. In A Beka, a blend is usually the first two letters of a word, or the initial consonant vowel portion. This is a beginning step to blending letter sounds to read words.
To play: There are five different mats included in the file for use during small group time. Many have the same pictures, but they are in a unique order. You will want to print each mat, and then five copies of the blend cards. I recommend laminating all pieces for durability. At small groups, each child will get a mat and their own stack of cards. Students will look at the picture, say the word, and then cover it with the beginning blend.
